Selma Goldwitz
A Brooklyn native, Selma Goldwitz grew up in the 1940’s and showed a talent for art early on. In grade school, her design for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade Turkey Balloon was a finalist. At Girls Commercial High School she excelled in fine art. Selma’s artistic talent blossomed at The Arts Students League. She was fortunate to have as her Manhattan neighbors artists like Moses Soyer, Arnold Newman and Stuart Davis who admired and encouraged her work. Selma participated in the Greenwich Village Outdoor Art show during the Beat 50’s, had a number of solo shows at the Karlbach Gallery in Manhattan and was a fixture at the Ridgefield (CT) Guild of Artists. Her friend and neighbor from those days, Maurice Sendak had a few of her works to enjoy. Selma’s work can be found in private collections.
