Drawpaint Illustration
Paul is an illustrator based in South Wales, UK, who works with traditional media such as pens, pencils and watercolour paints to produce decorative, animal themed illustrations which have been licensed as greetings cards, puzzles, prints and homeware.
The underpinning concept of his work is the use of pattern as a means of altering the balance between figure and ground, with his images featuring hidden or camouflaged elements that are not apparent immediately, such as an animal included within the body of another. This adds another level of interest to the work and creates striking and unique imagery.
His use of flat areas of strong colour, asymmetrical design and little or no perspective stem from his love of the Japanese method of wood-block printing called ukiyo-e. He is also inspired by the floral forms and flowing lines of Art Nouveau.
